5 Benefits of Sensory Play
Creativity & Imagination
Our sensory fillers lean in to open-ended play, which allows children to engage in imaginative play. Allowing them to explore, create and be curious. Open-ended play gives a child a sense of autonomy, encouraging them to play independently and make decisions, which often leads to longer engagement.
Fine Motor Development
Sensory play encourages the coordination of a child's eyes, hands & fingers, aiding in the development of their fine motor skills as they grow. These skills can be transferred to everyday life. Pouring, scooping, grouping, using tongs to move a pasta seashell in to a bowl, using their hands to manipulate & move pieces around, are all great actions that encourage hand-eye coordination, pincer grip, finger dexterity etc.
Cognitive Development
The variety of a sensory mix encourages many senses. The sound as the materials move around, the texture of rice vs pasta vs couscous as well as the feeling of a scoop or tongs in their hand. The shapes, sizes and colours all stimulate sensory perception and problem solving skills. ‘Which utensil is best for moving rice? Which material feels uniform in my hand? Which is round? Which is biggest? Etc
Language Skills
The multi-faceted elements of sensory play encourage children to ask questions, share ideas and describe their experience. Vocabulary expansion is often a benefit; expanding their use of adjectives and descriptive language.
Explore & Discover!
Our mixes allow children to explore the world around them. The elements and tones of a forest, colours of the galaxy, which animals you would find in the sea etc. This can be great for encouraging curiosity & prompt conversations.
